Frequency — how often you actually complete a session — is the simplest lever most people can pull on their progress. This is the deep-dive behind the Sessions per week headline tile in your Review and the frequency trend in your Trends. The one-sentence version. Frequency isn't magic — it earns its headline spot because it's the lever that's easiest to control day to day, and because it quietly drives the two things that actually move the needle over months: total accumulated work and consistency. So the tile is best read as "am I showing up as often as my plan expects?" — a behaviour gauge first, a physiology gauge second. More sessions is not automatically more progress.

What the tile actually counts

"Sessions per week" is a simple count: the number of sessions you completed in a period, shown against what your plan scheduled. It's a frequency metric — the cadence of your training events — reported weekly, and viewable monthly for a smoother trend. It answers one plain question: am I showing up as often as my plan expects?

Frequency is one of three dials that together describe a training dose. Keeping them straight is what makes the tile useful rather than a number to inflate:

These aren't independent — they multiply together into your total training load. Frequency is simply the one you control most directly. You can't always dial in the perfect load or the perfect volume, but "did I show up today?" is almost always within reach. That's precisely why it makes a good headline number.

Common misconception: "more sessions is always more progress." Not so. Sessions are a proxy for accumulated work and consistency — not a direct dose knob you crank for results. Six rushed, low-effort sessions do not beat three good ones. Read this tile as "am I consistent with my plan?", not "higher is always better."

Why consistent frequency beats occasional intensity

The practical claim behind this tile is that spreading training across the week tends to beat cramming it into one heroic session — that three moderate sessions usually out-performs one all-out session. That's well-supported directionally, but it's worth being honest about why, because the popular version of this claim is stronger than the evidence. There are three real pathways, and only the first two are about physiology at all.

1. It lets you accumulate more quality work

Progress in both muscle and cardiovascular fitness is driven substantially by total work accumulated over time, not by any single session. Spread the same weekly work across three days and each session starts fresher and ends before fatigue tanks your technique and effort — so more of the total work is quality work. Force one weekly session to carry all the volume and you run into fatigue, form breakdown and diminishing returns partway through. Frequency, in other words, is largely a tool for distributing volume into work you can actually do well.

2. It keeps the adaptation signal "on" more of the time

After a resistance session, muscle protein synthesis — the rebuilding signal — tends to stay elevated for roughly a day to two, with the peak in the first day or so, then drifts back toward baseline. Training a muscle again within that recovery rhythm re-triggers the signal, so you spend more of the week in an adapting state rather than letting it lapse for six days. That window is approximate and genuinely variable — it shifts with training status, session size and age — so treat "roughly 24–48 hours" as a rule of thumb, not a fixed constant that's the same for everyone.

3. It's simply easier to sustain — and this is the big one

A pattern of three moderate sessions is generally far easier to keep up for months than one all-out weekly session. And long-term results — fat loss, fitness, health markers — are overwhelmingly about what you can keep doing. Adherence data consistently show large drop-off over the months after people start a programme, so the frequency that fits your life is the frequency you'll still be doing in six months. For fat loss specifically, more frequent activity also means energy expenditure spread across the week, more chances to stay in the habit, and steadier energy — versus one session that's easy to skip and easy to "reward" away afterwards.

The correction the internet usually skips. When total weekly volume is held equal, the evidence that higher frequency beats lower frequency for muscle growth is modest and mixed — several reviews find little difference once volume is matched, and where an edge shows up it's small and clearest at the low end (training a muscle twice a week tends to beat once a week). So the honest mechanism is: frequency helps mainly because it lets you accumulate more quality volume and stay consistent — not because frequency itself is a strong, standalone growth signal. "Train more often tends to beat training rarely" is true. "Frequency is the master variable" and "you must hit each muscle X times a week or it won't grow" are not.

Put simply: if you can only get one thing right, get consistent frequency right. Three sessions you actually complete beat one perfect session you often skip.

How completed sessions advance your plan

There's a solid physiological reason to count completions rather than plans: adaptation follows accumulated, completed, recovered-from stimulus. Common misconception: "I did one really hard session, so I should skip ahead." Adaptation rewards accumulated, repeatable, recovered-from work — not one-off intensity spikes. Progression is earned by consistency, which is exactly what the app is built around. If your phases feel stalled, the tile usually tells you why: your completed-vs-scheduled ratio has slipped.

Age, sport and your personal "ideal" frequency

There is no universal ideal frequency. The right number for you depends on the person and the kind of training — and it changes over time. A few well-established factors move your personal optimum:

Common misconception: "more is always better." Beyond your personal recovery ceiling, extra sessions add fatigue faster than adaptation and can stall or even reverse progress. The goal is appropriate frequency, not maximal frequency — and where you find it is by observing yourself over time, not by copying a number from someone else.

When frequency dips — shorter beats skipped

When this tile starts trending down, the fix is usually to shrink the session, not cancel it. When life gets busy, cut the session in half rather than cutting it out. There are three reasons a trimmed-but-completed session beats a skipped one:

Ten to twenty focused minutes counted as a completion beats a planned hour that never happens. So if this tile is dipping, that's the move: keep the session on the calendar and make it smaller.

Common misconception: "if I can't do the full session, it's not worth doing." This all-or-nothing belief is one of the leading reasons people quit entirely. Partial beats nothing — both physiologically and behaviourally.

Quality vs quantity

The companion principle, stated plainly: completion counts. A session that actually happens beats a bigger session that doesn't — because only completed work produces adaptation and energy expenditure, a planned session contributes exactly nothing until it's done, and consistency compounds from many small deposits rather than one big one. Effort within a shorter session is often higher, too — you're fresher and more focused — so short sessions punch above their duration.

But keep this honest in both directions. Yes, the quantity of completed sessions matters — that's the whole point of the tile. But quantity without quality doesn't substitute for real training. Merely opening the app, or going through the motions with no genuine effort, isn't the same stimulus as actually training. A "completed session" is most useful when it means "I genuinely worked," even if only briefly.

Two opposite errors to avoid. First, perfectionism — "if it's not the full plan, skip it" — which quietly ends more training habits than any injury. Second, box-ticking — logging a completion that had no real effort and then wondering why results don't follow. The tile works best when a completion honestly means you trained. Between "long and skipped" and "short and completed," completed wins every time — as long as the short session involved real work.

Recovery: where fitness is actually built

Training is a stress. Fitness is built during recovery, not during the session — so your frequency has to respect recovery, or the stress outpaces the adaptation. This matters for how you read the tile: a higher number is only "better" if your recovery is keeping up.

The core cycle is well-established and safe to state plainly: stress → recover → adapt. A session temporarily reduces your function (fatigue, muscle disruption); with adequate recovery your body rebuilds slightly better than before; repeat those appropriately-spaced cycles and you progress. Too little recovery relative to the stress and you accumulate fatigue, stall, and raise your injury risk instead. Locally, a muscle needs time — roughly a day to a few days depending on how hard or novel the session and on the individual — to repair before another hard bout on the same muscle. That's the mechanistic basis for spacing hard sessions and spreading volume across days.

Chronically training harder than you recover — the under-recovery state — is associated with disrupted sleep, mood and appetite changes, and altered stress-hormone patterns. In its extreme, prolonged form it's called overtraining syndrome, which is genuinely rare and generally requires sustained excessive load with poor recovery. To be clear: an ordinary person doing three or four sensible sessions a week is not at risk of hormonal havoc. This is what under-recovery can look like at the far end, not a warning about normal training.

The "CNS fatigue" myth, corrected. The popular idea that ordinary strength sessions cause large, multi-day central-nervous-system fatigue that dictates your frequency is not well supported. Reliable lasting central fatigue is far easier to demonstrate after prolonged endurance efforts (think marathons) than after a typical resistance session, and several studies fail to find meaningful lasting CNS fatigue from lifting. Most of what you feel between sessions is better explained by local muscle recovery, sleep, nutrition and overall life stress — not a depleted nervous system. Don't build your frequency around "CNS recovery" as if it were the main limiter; the honest limiters are local recovery, sleep, fuel and total stress.

Sleep is the quiet lever here. Poor or short sleep is associated with elevated, dysregulated cortisol, which can promote sodium and water retention. Practically, after a bad night or a high-stress stretch you may see the scale tick up from water, not fat — so sleep loss can blunt fat loss and mask real scale progress via water retention, rather than "erasing your results." Trends over one to two weeks tell the truth; single-day scale jumps are usually water and typically resolve within a day or two. Your weight trend and sleep charts are there precisely so you can check this before assuming your plan is broken.

The upshot for frequency: your target only "works" if recovery keeps up. Protect sleep, eat enough (especially protein), and if you're persistently drained, sore, sleeping badly or losing motivation, that's a signal to not add sessions — and possibly to trim them — rather than to push through.

How frequency works with volume and intensity

Frequency doesn't act alone — it's one of three dials, and they trade off. Understanding the interaction is what turns this tile into something actionable rather than a number to maximise.

For general fitness and fat loss, more frequent moderate sessions are usually the sweet spot: enough total work and energy expenditure, spread thin enough to recover and sustain, without the injury and burnout risk of stacking high frequency and high volume and high intensity all at once.

Common misconception: "maximise all three — train more often, longer and harder — for faster results." Beyond your recovery ceiling this backfires: fatigue accumulates faster than adaptation, and injury and drop-out risk rise. Progress comes from the balanced, recoverable, sustainable combination — with frequency used to distribute the load intelligently, not cranked in isolation.
