That framing turns out to be too tidy. The mechanism that makes it possible is worth understanding, because it explains who recomposes easily and who doesn't. Building muscle needs energy and raw material (protein); a strict "you must be in a surplus" rule assumes that energy has to come from your plate. But it can also come from your stored body fat — the body can draw on fat reserves to help fund muscle building while overall energy intake sits at or a little below maintenance. That's why the more fat you have to spare, the more readily recomposition tends to happen, and why a very lean person has less of this internal fuel to work with.

Who finds it slow — lean, trained lifters

The honest flip side: if you're already lean and well-trained, recomposition tends to be slow and hard-won. Two things work against you. Protein — the non-negotiable

Common misconception → correct it. "More protein always means more muscle, so I should eat as much as possible." Overstated. A small or no deficit

Recomposition lives around energy maintenance: a small deficit, roughly maintenance, or a very slight surplus — not the big surplus of a bulk or the big deficit of a cut. The size of the gap should scale with how much fat you have to lose. If you're carrying a lot, a modest deficit pulls fat off nicely while training and protein protect and build muscle.
