The intermittent group lost more fat — about 12.3 kg versus 8.0 kg — and their resting energy expenditure fell less, suggesting the maintenance blocks blunted some of the adaptive slowdown. Importantly, weight change during those maintenance blocks was essentially zero — the breaks didn't cost them their progress.

That's a striking result, and it's the strongest single piece of evidence for the idea. But read the fine print before you generalise it: it was done in men with obesity, under tightly controlled provided-food conditions, and it took nearly twice as long in real time to lose that fat. The wider literature is far less tidy. The ISSN's review of intermittent versus daily calorie restriction concluded there is no significant advantage for body composition, on average — plenty of studies find that when the total deficit is matched, it simply doesn't matter much whether you take it in a straight line or in blocks.
