Fuelling a session — before and during

Fluid and hydration

Even a small drop in hydration can blunt strength, endurance and concentration — and all three matter when you're reading a sequence and holding a crimp. Sweat losses in climbing vary widely with the gym or crag temperature, humidity and how hard you're working, so there's no universal number. Low energy availability and RED-S

This is the section climbers most need. The most serious nutrition problem in the sport isn't the wrong snack — it's chronically eating too little to support training, driven by the belief that being lighter always means climbing better. Sports scientists measure this as energy availability: roughly, energy eaten minus energy burned in exercise, expressed per kilogram of fat-free (lean) mass.

Research associates dropping below about 30 kcal per kg of fat-free mass per day with a cascade of problems, while something nearer 45 kcal/kg of fat-free mass per day is considered healthy for an active body. Sustained low energy availability is the root cause of what the International Olympic Committee calls Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S): a syndrome affecting both men and women that can impair bone health, tendon and connective-tissue quality, hormones and menstrual function, immunity, metabolism, mood — and, the irony every climber should note, performance itself.

For a strength-to-weight sport this is especially cruel. Weakened bone means more stress fractures; compromised connective tissue means more finger, pulley and tendon injuries — exactly the injuries that end climbing seasons. And the hormonal and recovery hit erodes the power and skill that "getting light" was supposed to buy. Under-fuelling doesn't make you a lighter, stronger climber; over time it tends to make you a more fragile, weaker one.
