- In Trends it's the mean heart rate across all the sessions you logged in the period you're viewing. It answers "across this stretch of training, how hard did my heart typically work?"
- In Review it's the avg HR headline tile for a single session, coloured against a heart-rate zone (more on the 50–85% band in section 6).
Heart rate is simply how many times your heart beats per minute. Averaging it over a session — or over a whole period — collapses a great deal of moment-to-moment movement into a single number. That makes it a summary statistic: think of it like an average grade. It tells you the centre of gravity of your effort, and it says nothing about the spread. Two very different weeks — or two people — can land on an identical average while having trained in completely different ways.
It's also worth knowing, without getting lost in it, that "average" can be computed more than one way. A time-weighted average of every heartbeat sample is not quite the same as a simple mean of per-session averages, and a couple of long, easy sessions can pull a period average down even in a genuinely hard block. None of this makes the number wrong — it just means you should treat it as an approximate central tendency, not a precise measurement.
Why heart rate is an intensity proxy at all
Heart rate rises to meet your body's demand for oxygen. When your muscles work harder they need more oxygen, and your heart responds by pumping more blood. The amount of blood your heart moves each minute — cardiac output — is heart rate multiplied by stroke volume (the blood pumped per beat). During exercise both climb, but stroke volume reaches a ceiling fairly early. Beyond that point, most of the extra demand is met by raising heart rate.
That's the whole reason heart rate works as an intensity proxy: across the moderate-to-vigorous range, it tracks reasonably well with how much oxygen you're using, and therefore with how hard you're working. What it is not is a direct readout of calories or fat burned. Heart rate is a demand signal. It correlates loosely with energy expenditure during a session, but body-composition change is governed by your overall energy balance across days and weeks — not by any single heart-rate number. That distinction is where one of the most persistent fitness myths lives.
When a falling average means you're getting fitter
This is the good-news mechanism, and it's well-established physiology — as long as one qualifier stays front and centre: at the same effort. As your aerobic fitness improves, your heart tends to accomplish the same external work at a lower heart rate. So if your training has stayed broadly similar week to week and your average heart rate is drifting downward, that's a classic sign the engine is becoming more efficient.
Several adaptations, working together, produce this:
- A stronger, more efficient beat. Endurance training tends to increase stroke volume — the heart fills and empties more effectively, moving more blood per beat. To deliver the same cardiac output, it then needs fewer beats per minute.
- Changes in the nervous system's control of the heart. Training is associated with a shift in autonomic balance — greater vagal (parasympathetic) influence — that lowers resting and submaximal heart rate.
- Adaptations in the heart's own pacemaker. Newer research points to intrinsic changes in the sinoatrial node — the heart's natural pacemaker — as a meaningful contributor, meaning it isn't only about the nervous system.
The net effect is robust and has a name: training bradycardia — a trained heart does the same job with fewer beats. A gradually falling resting and submaximal heart rate is one of the most reliable, cheapest, at-home signals that endurance conditioning is taking hold. If your sessions have been comparable and the trend is down, that's a plausible sign your fitness is improving. Celebrate the trend, not any single week.
One honest note for the curious: the exact mechanism of training bradycardia is still debated by researchers — the older "it's all increased vagal tone" story has been challenged by evidence for changes in the pacemaker itself. That debate doesn't change the practical takeaway one bit. Your heart getting more efficient with training is not in question; only the precise recipe is.
What a rising average can — and can't — flag
If your training load and conditions are steady but your average heart rate creeps up, something is raising the cardiovascular cost of the same work. The important thing is that there are several possible explanations, and most of them are ordinary. Treat a rising average as a prompt to check the context, never as a diagnosis. The usual suspects, roughly in order of how often they're the real cause:
- The sessions were genuinely harder. The most common and most benign explanation — hills, heat, a faster pace, or shorter rests between sets quietly raised the intensity without you clocking it.
- Heat, dehydration, poor sleep, stress, caffeine, illness or altitude. All of these can raise your heart rate at a given effort, and they're frequently the real driver that gets overlooked.
- Fatigue or incomplete recovery. Accumulated training stress with too little recovery can be associated with an elevated resting or submaximal heart rate as the body works harder to hold the same output.
- Genuine deconditioning. A real loss of fitness reverses the adaptation from the previous section, so the same work simply costs more beats.
A sustained, unexplained upward drift at genuinely matched effort is one of the inputs a coach might use to suspect accumulating fatigue — but it's only one input, and it's easily confounded. So before concluding anything, ask: were my sessions actually harder? Hotter? Was I short on sleep, stressed, under-recovered, or fighting something off? Only after ruling those out does "possible fatigue or lost fitness" become the leading explanation.
One normal effect worth naming so you don't misread it: cardiovascular drift. Within a single long session, heart rate tends to climb gradually even at a constant pace or power — mainly because rising core temperature and fluid loss reduce stroke volume, so heart rate rises to keep cardiac output steady. That upward creep on a long workout is expected and healthy, not a sign you're losing fitness mid-session.
Finally, the sensible medical line: a persistent, unexplained rise in your resting or exercise heart rate — especially alongside symptoms like breathlessness, chest discomfort, dizziness or palpitations — is worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Why you can't compare your number to anyone else's
The "normal" heart rate for any given effort varies enormously from person to person. Absolute heart-rate numbers are simply not comparable across individuals. What shapes your personal baseline:
- Resting heart rate varies widely between healthy people — genetics, fitness, age and lifestyle all contribute.
- Maximum heart rate declines with age on average and varies substantially between people of the same age. Importantly, it is not meaningfully raised by training — getting fitter lowers your heart rate at a given effort, it doesn't lift your ceiling.
- Fitness level — fitter people tend to run lower heart rates at the same absolute workload.
- Training type — the same person shows very different heart-rate profiles across activities (see the next section).
- Everyday modifiers — hydration, temperature, sleep, stress, caffeine, some medications (beta-blockers lower it; stimulants raise it) and illness all nudge the number.
These reflect real differences in autonomic tone, stroke volume, blood volume, body size and pacemaker properties. The practical rule is simple: compare your average heart rate to your own past, never to a friend's or a chart. A "high" or "low" number only means something relative to your baseline.

It's the "meat and potatoes" range behind most general health and fitness guidance, and a reasonable target for most healthy adults most of the time. So if your period average sits inside 50–85% of your (estimated) maximum, your typical training is landing in the recommended general zone. The colour is a rough orientation, not a prescription.
The same you, very different numbers
Different activities produce very different heart-rate responses for the same perceived effort — or the same importance to your goals. That's why the period average blends profiles that don't really belong on the same scale:
- Steady aerobic work (running, cycling, rowing) makes heart rate track intensity fairly cleanly, and it tends to sit high and sustained — large muscles, continuous oxygen demand.
- Resistance / strength training is where heart rate stops being a clean intensity read. Heavy sets are brief and separated by rest, so the average heart rate across a lifting session is often modest even when the muscular effort was maximal. Heart rate during strength work doesn't scale with load the way it does in aerobic exercise. A low average on a lifting day says very little about how hard you actually trained.
- Intervals / HIIT produce a sawtooth — heart rate spikes very high in the work bouts and drops in recovery. The average can look middling despite genuinely high peak stress. This is closely related to your work-to-rest ratio, which describes the shape the average can't.
So when you read your period average, remember it's averaging these very different things together. A block heavy on strength or intervals can show a deceptively moderate average; a block of steady cardio will read higher — without either being "better."
How to read it well
One habit makes this stat reliable instead of misleading: focus on trends, not single days, and compare like with like.
- Compare against your own history — week to week and month to month — holding training type and conditions as constant as you reasonably can.
- Trends over single points. One high or low day is noise; sleep, heat, caffeine, stress, a hard session or a measurement glitch can all move it. A direction sustained over several weeks is the signal.
- Read it with context, never alone. Pair the number with what training you did, how hard it felt, your sleep, and your life stress. It's one input among several.
- Keep the "same effort" caveat in view. Every inference about fitness improving or fatigue building depends on effort and conditions being comparable across the window you're comparing.
The healthy mental model: average heart rate is a trend line to watch, not a scorecard to chase.
What it doesn't tell you
Being honest about the limits is what keeps this number useful:
- It doesn't distinguish intensity zones. An average can't tell a steady moderate session from an interval session that alternated near-max efforts with full rest — they can produce the same mean.
- It underrepresents strength training. Hard lifting can show a modest average. Don't equate a low average with an easy session.
- It's not a fat-loss meter. Heart rate reflects cardiovascular demand, not calories or fat burned; body-composition change is governed by energy balance over time.
- It's confounded by life. Heat, dehydration, sleep, stress, caffeine, illness, altitude and medications all move it — a change may reflect your week, not your fitness.
- Zone edges are estimates. They're anchored to an estimated maximum heart rate that carries real per-person error.
- It's not a diagnosis. It's a general fitness-education signal, not a clinical measurement.
