The deaths, documented by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, shocked the sport and prompted the NCAA to change the rules: it introduced weight-certification and minimum body-fat programmes, banned rubber suits, diuretics, laxatives and saunas for cutting, and moved weigh-ins much closer to competition (typically 1–2 hours before) specifically to remove the incentive for a huge overnight dehydration cut.

Making weight the safe way
